Big Brother 17 Recap: FINALE

FINAL 3 HOH COMPS WINNERS:

  • Part 1: Vanessa
  • Part 2: Steve
  • Part 3: Steve
Evicted (3rd Place): Vanessa
Runner Up: Liz
Winner: Steve

Big Brother 17 is officially over! I didn't think I'd actually blog about the entire season, but when your favourite makes it all the way until almost the end, it's a good motivator. Of course once Johnny Mac was evicted last week, I cared significantly less but I figured I'll finish this off since I've come this far. Let's talk about the finale!

Part 1 of the Final HOH competition was very similar to BB14's, where you sit on a wooden disc and alternate between getting dunked into cold water and slammed against a wall. This ended up being the longest endurance competition of the summer with almost 4 hours long. Steve fell first around the 3 and a half hour mark. After he fell, Vanessa started her intimation tactic on Liz which ended up working and Liz dropped about 10 minutes afterwards awarding Vanessa Part 1 and she automatically advanced to Part 3.

The jury roundtable was hosted by Dr. Will again which is always nice because he's the best! Austin, of course, was the worst person there. His bitterness was gross and I'm so glad I never have to see this guy again. Everyone else was giving valid points all across the board about all 3 finalists.

Part 2 is a mix of mental and physical. This one was in the form of a giant crossword puzzle. Steve ended up beating Liz by 3 minutes. Which brings us to Part 3, Vanessa vs Steve. Part 3 is always jury statements. Steve has a 1 point lead for a while then Vanessa ended up tying it and it came down to the final juror, Johnny Mac's statement. Steve ended up getting the answer correct, and did the only smart thing left to do, he evicted Vanessa knowing there was no way to beat her in the end.

The jury statements for Liz and Steve were really good, much better than last year! It was clear who was going to win then. Steve's answers were well thought out and valid whereas Liz just kept saying she campaigned for herself sometimes and she really wanted the money..it was embarrassing, let's just leave it at that. Came time for the vote, and Steve ended up winning a 6-3 vote.

Votes for Steve: John, James, Meg, Becky, Jackie, Shelli
Votes for Liz: Vanessa, Austin, Julia

America's Favourite Houseguest was the part I was most looking forward as I put in a lot of work for Johnny Mac to win it. But something weird happened with the voting this year. The site wouldn't work for a day and a half, when it did it was sometimes unlimited and sometimes wouldn't count all 20 votes. Either way, all my efforts amounted to nothing as John lost to James. But I'm still happy for James, he was entertaining and I can see why he won it. John was in the Top 3 with Jason so I was happy about that!

Time to talk about my favourite houseguest, one last time! Johnny Mac time!!

I am truly going to miss this guy!! My entire summer was dedicated to him, so it's been weird this last week to not go on the feeds to see what he was doing every day. Some didn't fully understand his gameplay, and yes at times it was questionable, but I got it and I liked it. I saw so many people online say that he didn't have a clue what he was going on in the house, which I would always defend that he knew exactly what was going on, he just didn't know what he could do about it. It's hard to make the moves you want without winning an HOH, and it's not like he didn't try. I can't even tell you how many comps he came in second for! Something I'm sure he was equally if not more so frustrated about. He did make some bad moves throughout the summer, but it still got him to Final 4 so it worked for him. I still wish he had evicted Steve at Final 5, everything would have been different but there was no way of knowing.

One thing you can't deny, he was the most entertaining in the DR out of all the other HGs. All the other houseguests were either scripted or just too straightforward where as Johnny Mac was loud, energetic and hilarious! Being the DR King has it's downfall as he was called to the DR so many times through out the day that other HG started thinking he was a twist. That was frustrating as a fan to see them talk about getting him out because of it. I know it was one of the reasons Austin targeted him the week John was evicted the first time, but luckily he came right back in and that became less of an issue.  Although it was hilarious when Steve finally told him that he could hear him in the DR and asked if he was a twist. I'm surprised they didn't show that on the show, it was really funny!

It was so much fun watching Johnny Mac play this game this summer! He's become one of my all-time favourites, and I would love to see him play again. I would gladly dedicate another summer to him if he came back. I know from watching the feeds that he said he got the experience and he wouldn't do it again, but I hope he reconsiders. He did say in his backyard interview with Jeff that he might come back if asked, but I don't know if he was just saying that or if he meant it. I guess we'll have to wait and see. All I know is I'm honestly going to miss the Rockstar Dentist!!

And that's a wrap on Big Brother 17!

Rating: 5/5

My Review:

Just like Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Poehler is one of my favourite human beings! There's nothing she's done that I haven't loved. I always loved her on Saturday Night Live, loved her movies and of course, loved Parks and Recreation. She's one of the Queens of Comedy, and she's earned that title. Everything she does is fantastic and this book is no exception!

I bought the audiobook for this because I love the idea of having my favourite celebrities read their story to me. I would highly recommend this, it's the best. Amy tackles a lot in this book; stories of her life growing up, the start of her career and how she got to be where she is now, stories from SNL and Parks and Rec, her love for Tina Fey and others, etc. She also has guest speakers with her in her audiobook which was a nice addition. It's really worth it to buy both the book and audiobook!

What I love is Amy writes a really real book! You expect it to be funny because it's Amy Poehler and while there are very funny moments, Amy mixes her comedy with real moments and important messages. It's really inspiring and real, and I appreciated that. I appreciated this book! It was so well written, and well done to which I'm not surprised, it's Amy Poehler! She's amazing in everything she does. I will forever be a fan of hers, and this book just made me love her even more.

Have you read Yes Please? What are your thoughts?

Big Brother 17 Recap: Week 12

Final 5 Eviction (Tuesday)

HOH: Vanessa
Nominees: John & Steve
Have-Nots: N/A
POV Players: Vanessa, John, Steve, Austin, Liz
POV Winner: John, used on himself
Replacement Nominee: Austin
Evicted Houseguest: Austin, voted out 2-1 (Vanessa broke the tiebreaker)

Final 4 Eviction (Wednesday)

HOH: Steve
Nominees: John & Vanessa
Have-Nots: N/A
POV Players: Steve, John, Vanessa, Liz
POV Winner: Vanessa, used on herself
Replacement Nominee: Liz
Evicted Houseguest: John, Vanessa was the sole vote to evict

This week went from the best eviction of the season to the worst for me. I've been waiting since week 5 when Austin was suppose to be backdoored instead of Jason for this guy to walk out the door. So that was sweet justice on Tuesday night, but then Wednesday came and out went my favourite player for the second time. Let's talk about how it all went down.

A battle of endurance started in the form of the egg competition. It's where you have to stick your fingers through a fence and transfer one egg from one end to the other without dropping it, the first to transfer 10 eggs wins. Vanessa dominated the competition, but Johnny Mac yet again came very close to winning it and came in second again. Vanessa's a very unpredictable person, and I already had a feeling she was going to go after John the moment she won HOH. So while I was disappointed, I wasn't surprised.

Once John was nominated, he made a pitch to Austin and Liz that he would throw the veto to them if they voted to keep him over Steve. Something he was legitimately going to do until he noticed during the competition that Steve was getting close to winning so he decided to win it for himself, and just won his 4th POV like it was nothing.

So once he used the veto on himself, Austin went up on the block, and it seemed like a done deal. Enter Johnny Mac being very confusing with where his vote was going to the point that even I didn't know what he was going to do, and I got pretty good at knowing and understanding everything he did this summer. There was advantages to evicting both houseguests, but ultimately he ended up evicting Austin forcing a tie and leaving it in Vanessa's hands and she finished Austin off. (More on Johnny Mac's dilemma below).

After Austin's eviction, they went into the Final 4 HOH competition which was where they would show clips of past HG's and would bleep out a word. Julie would then say what the word was and you had to answer if that was True or False. It came down to John vs Steve in a tiebreaker question. John went over so it went to Steve. Yet again, second place for JMac and 0 HOH's this summer, this one was especially hard because it would have guaranteed him Final 3.

Steve made his nominations of John and Vanessa which don't really matter considering it all comes down to who wins the POV. One thing those nominations did was make John set a record for most nominations in a season, beating Victoria (BB16) and Spencer (BB15) who were nominated 8 times, Johnny Mac was nominated 9 times during BB17.

POV was hosted by Beastmode Cowboy (Caleb) from BB16. It was the Days comp where they were told an event in the house, and they had to guess the correct date. They had two lifelines in the game. If they came in last twice, they were eliminated from the competition. Again it came down to John vs Vanessa, but Vanessa ended up winning it which meant John was pretty much screwed. Which is why come eviction night, it was no surprise that Vanessa ended Johnny Mac's came at Final 4.

Now we are left with Steve, Liz and Vanessa as our Final 3. So we'll see how that plays out in the finale next week!

Johnny Mac time! (talk about his choice to evict Steve. reference F2 screwing him over)

While the show made it seem like it was all Vanessa's doing (like they always do) with getting rid of Austin instead of Steve. It was all John! He's the one who told Steve that he has to get Vanessa to approach him with keeping Steve and not the other way around or he couldn't keep him. Vanessa then approached him later that day and tried to "convince" John that they needed to keep Steve. It was all brilliant work on John's part, but of course it wasn't portrayed on the show as the show is clearly trying to portray Vanessa as this mastermind that is predicted to win.

I want to talk a bit about the advantages of John voting to evict Steve would have been because I do agree that ended up being a mistake. Three times in this game John's Final 2 with Steve ended up screwing up his game, both times he was evicted it was because of it, and had he not won POV at Final 5, he would have been evicted then because of it. It's extremely frustrating as a fan of John's because I know he was never loyal to Steve until he had to be! Which was Week 8 when he knew he was losing Becky who was his #1 closest ally. But yet this Final 2 with Steve never once effected Steve's game, if anything John was used as a shield for him while John got the brunt end of the deal. So I saw the advantage of John severing that and evicting Steve.

But the disadvantages outweighed the advantages. The disadvantages was going to Final 4 with a showmance (there's no way of knowing how Austin would have done in that HOH comp). Another disadvantage was if he cut Steve, he'd lose someone who would take him to Final 2 no matter what whereas with the other 3, he would have to win out and take himself there.

I'm truly going to miss Johnny Mac! It's only been a day and I feel weird not going on the feeds to watch him. But I'll write more about him and what he did for me this summer in next week's final Big Brother post for the year.

Rating: 3.5/5

My Review:

Another book that took me forever due to my Big Brother addiction. I would go days without reading, and only reading a chapter or two at a time until I finally buckled down and finished it. I'll be honest, if I had read this book straight through it might have got a higher rating. But it took me over a month to read it, and here we are.

This is the first Huntley Fitzpatrick book I've read, and I am now a fan! I really love her style of writing and how each character stands out.  The book follows Gwen Castle as she goes through summer on the island that she lives on called Seashell Island. They have summer jobs for everyone as it's a touristy place to go in the summer. Gwen is a great character who is a good girl, but has a past that has her a little jaded. Namely Cass who she names her biggest mistake ever! This story follows how they grow from avoiding each other to coming to terms to growing together. I really loved seeing that relationship progress given their circumstances.

The supporting characters were amazing as well! I really loved Gwen's family, there was her hardworking mom, her cool grandpa, her sweet little brother, her tough dad, and overly determined cousin, Nic. Nic and Viven (Gwen's best friend) have been together forever, and I really enjoyed that storyline, and there's a twist at the end to what happens with them.

Overall, really great summer read! This summer I was all about reading summer books, so this was a great one to end summer with. I definitely want to read more Huntley Fitzpatrick books after this one!

Big Brother 17 Recap: Week 11

HOH: Steve
Nominees: Liz & Austin
Have-Nots: N/A
POV Players: Steve, Liz, Austin, John, Vanessa, Julia
POV Winner: Austin, used on himself
Replacement Nominee: Julia
Evicted Houseguest: Julia, voted out 3-0

Going into this week, it was 3 vs 3 with Austwins on one side and Vanessa/John/Steve on the other. The HOH competition was a puzzle where you had to identify which houseguest was missing from BB baseball trading cards. The person who came in last each round would be eliminated. It came down to John vs Steve. Before the HOH comp, John told Vanessa and Steve that if it came down to him vs one of them that he was going to throw it to them so that he could play in next week's comp because it will most likely be physical. So when it was down to the two boys, John threw it to Steve.

Steve originally wanted to nominate the twins, but Vanessa told him to leave the weakest player (Julia) off the block going into the POV comp. John then backed up this idea, but added that Austin should be the target because Vanessa and Austin are most likely working together. So with that nominations were set.

The POV was another knockout competition. Jessie (BB10/BB11) hosted the comp. One at a time, the order of players were picked and in order had to step up and pick a person to compete against. Then they had to spin 15 times and then run to their bowling ramp and try to knock down 4 pins in 15 seconds. If you didn't knock all 4 down, you had to go back and spin again 15 times. The person who knocks down all 4 pins first advances to the next round and then other person is eliminated.

First round: Liz challenged Steve and won, Steve is eliminated.
Second round: Julia challenged Austin and lost, Julia is eliminated.
Third round: John challenged Liz and won, Liz is eliminated.
Fourth round: Vanessa challenged Austin and lost, Vanessa is eliminated.
Final round: John vs Austin. John is eliminated. Austin wins POV.

During the POV, Vanessa manipulated Julia to challenge Austin which set Austin off which was throughly embarrassing might I add! But when John noticed the riff between Austin and everyone, he decided to use that to his advantage and threw the POV to Austin. After the comp, everyone was fighting minus John and Steve. Ultimately it all lead to Austin using the veto on himself and Julia becoming the replacement nominee.

While Liz is the obvious target, Vanessa declared early on that she would let the twins decide and she would do what they want, thinking that they would let Julia stay in the game. The twins decided that Liz needs to stay, throwing Vanessa off at first. But she decided to follow through with what they want. Austin was obviously always going to vote for Liz to stay, so John had no choice but to go with the majority as his vote didn't really matter and he couldn't care less either way. The show's edit made Vanessa look like the mastermind when really she was all over the place all week and was a mess on the feeds. Funny what editing can do when they predictably pick who they obviously want to win.

Whatever, it's Johnny Mac time! My favourite time!!

This was an easy week for Johnny Mac! With Steve in charge, he had no worries of going on the block regardless of what happened. People were upset that he threw both competitions, but as a fan of his, I both understood why he did it and supported him like I always do. This week there was no benefit to his game to win either competition. With Steve being the one to take the first shot at Austwins, it put a big target on Steve's back and minimized the target on John and quite frankly it's time that Steve got a target on his back. As for the Veto, yes it would have been nice to see John win another Veto so that it would build up his BB resume, but this was a veto that he didn't necessarily need to win especially when Julia was eliminated. For John, there was benefits to all three leaving so he really didn't care which one was the target at the end of the day! He's in Final 5 regardless!! Pretty good for someone who was nominated 7 times and was evicted once!

We're coming to the end of the season, things are going to start speeding up. This is the last normal week of Big Brother. I'm ready for the season to end to be honest. Although I will miss my daily dose of Johnny Mac, I'm ready to get my life back to normal.

See you next week!!

Big Brother 17 Recap: Week 10

Have-Nots: John, Meg, James, Julia

DOUBLE EVICTION

HOH: Liz
Nominees: John & James
Have-Nots: N/A
POV Players: Liz, John, James, Steve, Austin, Julia
POV Winner: Julia, not used
Replacement Nominee: N/A
Evicted Houseguest: James, voted out 4-0

JOHNNY MAC IS BACK!!!!

The four returning jurors (Shelli, Jackie, Becky, John) all competed to get back in the game, and John outlasted them all in the HOH competition, earning him his spot back in the game after being evicted 10 minutes prior to the comp. It came down to him vs Vanessa for HOH, which Vanessa won. A few hours before John was evicted, Vanessa asked John if he would work with her if he came back in the house, and he agreed he would. So now that he's back and she's HOH, they teamed up with Steve and made a Final 3 deal. Because of this new secret alliance, John was safe for the week despite Austin and the twins pushing for him to be nominated and sent right back to jury.

Meg and James, the best friend duo, was nominated instead mainly because they were the only two who didn't have a deal with Vanessa. James was the target, but in a Hide and Seek Veto competition, he won by hiding his veto the best in the house. With James coming off the block, Vanessa was forced to find a replacement nominee and was pressured all sides to put up John, but Vanessa suck to her gut in wanting to break up James and Meg, and keep her secret alliance member safe, so she ended up putting up Julia on the block.

For the first time, one of the twins was on the block for eviction night. Something that was up to debate amongst the BB community and some of the houseguests. John wanted to take the shot at them, but didn't want to mess up his new alliance with Vanessa. He did question if he should flip the vote with Steve, something that Steve agonized about all the way up until eviction day. Ultimately Steve deemed it too risky, and the boys voted out Meg.

Now we get into Double Eviction time! After Meg left, they went straight into the HOH competition, a True/False about pictures shown to them about past HG's, Liz ended up winning. She nominated James and John with James being the target. They go into the POV competition which was a crapshoot comp, they had to throw a ball on what looked like a boomerang and they had to shots, whatever the numbers added up to after two shots was your score. Julia ended up winning it and decided to honour her sister's nominations by not using the veto. James was then voted out on a 4-0 vote.

Okay Johnny Mac time!

First off, I was so happy that he won the jury buyback! To make it even better, he was safe all week which was a nice break after going through a week of hell. Although I will admit those few days were Vanessa was being pressured to put him up on the block had me worried, but it all worked out. Now to get to the whole vote debate. Fans on social media are not happy with Steve and John's decision to not vote Julia out. I was a little disappointed as well, but I get why they didn't vote her out. It was the safe route, and it probably paid off considering what happened during the double eviction. Let's assume Liz still would have won that competition, James would no longer have been her target, it would have shifted to Steve and John. There's no way of knowing how Meg would have done in both competitions, but if history is any indication, she wouldn't have done well. So either Austin or Liz might have won that POV instead and then Steve or John would have gone to jury, leaving the other one in a tight spot.

This game is a lot harder than it looks! Something as simple and obvious to us viewers isn't as clear cut in the Big Brother house. Sometimes you have to take risks in there. The vote was a risk that paid off as they both survived a double eviction.

While we're on the subject of bad decisions, Austin and the twins deciding to keep John safe over James just goes to show that John is a good Big Brother player. When he walked back in that house, those three wanted nothing more than to get rid of him again. But this week, John put in the work and stepped up his social game with them. He mended fences and got back in their good graces so much that they decided to keep him. Bad decision on their part, but I'm not complaining!!

So as of now, John is back and safe! He made Final 6, and has a chance in this game. Whether he ends up getting to the end, or wins America's Favourite Player (which I will be voting like a mad woman for him), I will always be rooting for him that will never change, no matter what.

Okay onwards to Week 11!
